The Light Beyond the Darkness | Seated Meditation (Copy)

With Serena Roschman | 20 minutes

When something is weighing on you, this practice offers a way to meet it with steadiness instead of force. We begin with free movement and simple attention to the direction of the breath, then explore pratiloma ujjayi, a gentle technique that pairs the soft ocean sound of ujjayi with breathing through one nostril at a time. You can always return to plain breath awareness if the technique feels like too much. Then we move into the handshake practice, learned from Pema Chödrön: you hold a moderately challenging situation in one hand and offer it all the benevolence you’ve ever received with the other. Nothing needs to change right away, and you can come back to this practice anytime during your day.

We close with the mantra Om Jyotir Aham, from the Upanishads, meaning “I am the light beyond the darkness.” It’s a reminder that even when the weather looks stormy, the wisest part of you is the wide open sky. Chant along, listen, or repeat it inwardly - whatever suits you today. Settle into a seat that supports you, maybe with a blanket nearby, and let the practice meet you where you are.
